Bodemeister Big Disappointment

On paper, Bodemesiter should have won the Preakness this past weekend.  His 4 furlong time was 3 seconds slower than the Kentucky Derby and the race a half furlong shorter.  He should have crossed the line easily, all by himself.   But that’s why there is no such thing as a sure thing.  He did finish a respectable 2nd, once again being overtaken at the wire by I’ll Have Another who now has a shot at horse racing immortality.  Of course the Belmont Stakes is a different race altogether at 12 furlongs.  With Bodemeister officially not running in the Stakes, I’ll Have Another will be the clear favorite, (he would have been the clear favorite either way).  The question now is, are there any horses in the field who have the stamina but not necessarily the speed to keep up with I’ll Have Another?  That remains to be seen.  But in horseracing it’s hard to not look at the intangibles; the fact that this horse obviously loves to win.   And that might be just enough to take him to the winners circle and the first triple crown since Affirmed in 1978.
