Wellness Industiral Complex Falsehood #2: Superfoods

There is no such thing as a “Superfood”.  It’s a ridiculous term coined by some attention seeking, profit driven make believe nutrition expert.  The truth is, some foods are certainly better for you than others.  But  there is no Single food that is a complete food that trumps all others.  You certainly can’t go wrong eating Salmon, Spinach, broccoli, legumes, nuts, avocados and blueberry’s.  Even red meat in moderation provides a great source of iron.  Steaks like filet Mignon are certainly less fatty than skirt steak or prime rib.  Sardines are a great source of vitamins and minerals as well as calcium.  But the point is that none of the above listed foods by themselves are perfect, complete or Super but a combination of them provides a healthy, well-balanced diet.  And that’s the key.  If you eat a well-balanced diet, you can turn off the “nutrition experts”.

I left off kale on purpose because while it may be good for you, it tastes terrible.  Every time I read about kale it involves new and creative ways to ingest it.  Steam it, chop it and my favorite, kale smoothies.  That’s how terrible it tastes.  You need to grind it up, combine it with other fruits, sugar and all sorts of other ingredients, too numerous to list here in order to make it ingestible. Often the concoction is so filled with sugar, natural or other that it defeats the purpose of eating it in the first place.  So I say wipe it off the list and put it back where it belongs, underneath smoked salmon.
