This Sunday begins the (PBAA) Periodical and Book Association of America and MPA or The Association of Magazine Media conference in Baltimore, Maryland. It is probably the most important conference to date as the industry is undergoing dramatic change. People love magazines and books but people also love their Kindles and I-Pads. Now, more than ever, we need innovators who innovate. Change is scary as the unknown always is but we can not continue doing things the same way and expect the industry to thrive. There is a competition for time and we must do whatever is necessary to capture as much of that time as possible. Technology and print are not mutually exclusive. In fact there can be and should be synergy. The past few years have been challenging for all industries as we have been enveloped by a lagging economy surrounded by continued uncertainty. This conference should be the declaration that as an industry we are going to do whatever is necessary to not only meet the challenges that lie ahead but to stay in the forefront of how people acquire information. The Newsstand is every bit as relevant as the internet in acquiring that information. It is up to us to get that message out by being proactive, by building excitement about print and digital, and not sitting on our hands while we wait for the final curtain call.
