I suppose one needs to be born playing the so-called beautiful game in order to understand its beauty. Although involved for many years with my sons, I can finally admit that I did not find it all that beautiful. Compared to football, hockey and basketball, soccer is quite dull. Baseball is America’s pastime and it’s a game of history, and statistics so it’s exempt from scrutiny. But a larger issue than the fact that soccer is not exciting, is the innate racism that the game seems to bring out in European fans. Bryant Gumble has reported on this a couple of times on Real Sports and it is an ongoing issue. It’s disgusting and has no place in sports. Just yesterday in Poland, black players on the Dutch team were being taunted with Monkey chants. I suppose those same players could have responded with Polish Jokes but instead practiced on the other side of the field. Nothing enrages me more than the blatant stupidity of ignorant racists. Those so-called fans should obviously be thrown out of the stadium and the UEFA needs to take deliberate action. This does not speak well of the beautiful game and speaks volumes about the fact that racism is alive and well in Europe. Maybe we Americans aren’t so ignorant after all.
