Follow Up to Ju Jitsu Gentle Way

When studying Ju Jitsu it is important to understand that within Ju Jitsu there are many different schools and styles.  For example, Brazilian Ju Jitsu is a great art for MMA and cage fighting, but is less desirable for the street.  When looking for a Ju Jitsu school it is important to understand exactly what you are looking for.  My style of Ju Jitsu incorporates a lot of Judo and is a very traditional Ju Jitsu school.  I would best characterize it as street fighting Ju Jitsu, with the understanding that going to the ground, (concrete) is never your first plan of attack.  One other very important point is since Ju Jitsu is a Japanese martial art, not Brazilian and certainly not American, it is crucial that the correct respect be given where it belongs.  For example, what the Brazilians refer to as the Triangle Choke, it actually Sankakyu Jime.  What is referred to as an arm bar is Juji Gatame.  Without the references, it is no different than plagiarizing a paper.  That is only my humble opinion.  But I feel very strongly about it.  Finally, bowing to your opponent, to the mat, is a significant sign of respect.  If you ever watch MMA, there is usually not much respect between the combatants and that is because they have not studied traditional arts such as Karate, Kung Fu, Tae Kwondo, Jeet Kune Do or had the correct instructors, otherwise, they would not act that way.  Boxers provide a great example of this respect.  Only in rare instances do boxers not hug and compliment each other following a fight.  It is a sign of great respect from one combatant to another.  The Martial Arts must be kept pure if they are to be kept alive.  MMA may or may not be around in 20 years but the traditional arts will survive forever.
