Anderson Cooper announcing that he’s gay raises some serious questions. First of all, it was no secret and something that most people knew anyway. Secondly, while there are some in the gay community who consider it a victory every time another celebrity comes out, I view it completely differently. Let me explain, Anderson Cooper is easily one of the best reporters on television. He reports the news with intelligence, integrity, and a straightforward approach that few other news people do. And while I respect him for making this announcement, it’s almost like a right of passage to have to say I am proud and not ashamed. Of course he’s not, why should he be? But anything less than this proclamation, would be seen as traitorous to the cause. I respect Anderson because he is an excellent reporter, period. His gayness means zero, zilch, nothing to the average citizen and viewer. The same applies to Matt Lauer being straight. It’s just unimportant. It would be no different from speaking about a female reporter and saying she’s really intelligent, intuitive, understands the issues, unbiased, oh and yeah she has great breasts. It trivializes what very intelligent people bring to the table. No one goes to a movie to see their favorite gay or straight actor. They go to see a movie based on the content or the actors on the screen. Neil Patrick Harris is great in How I Met Your Mother. Who cares that he’s gay? It only matters that he’s funny. The closet has taken on a life of its own and not for the better. If people in the GLBT community expect to win the rights and respect they so desire and deserve, it will be much more effective to do it as human beings and citizens, not just gay human beings. That will signify real and true equality.
