Currently, at the United Nations in NYC, there are talks taking place regarding an international ban on arms trading, with Iran given a key role. It’s no different from giving the fox the key to the hen-house. Has the world learned nothing about placating dictatorial regimes? There are those, including Amnesty International, who would like to see such a treaty ratified. But make no mistake, it is not in the best interest of the United States. President Obama should have opted out as President Bush did in 2006. We, as a country, should never be involved with any treaties that conflict with the US Constitution the President has sworn to uphold and protect. Gun ownership is guaranteed by the Second Amendment and should not be surrendered to world scrutiny. While the treaty is not yet fully written, if ratified, it could greatly or completely hinder our ability to sell arms to allies such as South Korea and Israel. A foreign policy of consensus and diplomacy is preferable in theory, but the Obama Administration must not sell our fundamental rights to the dysfunctional member countries of the UN. The United States of America answers to no one. We must remain sovereign and separate from the rest of the world even as we participate. We have been and continue to be the world’s best hope for peace. But peace is only achievable by the ability to defend oneself. That’s why the single most important Amendment to the Constitution is the Second Amendment. Dictatorships don’t allow the citizenry to own pistols or rifles, guns of any kind. The people of China are at the mercy of their tyrannical leaders because it has been successful in its endeavour to disarm them. What good is the First Amendment if the citizens don’t have the means to protect those freedoms? Without that ability, they are just words on paper. The United States is the longest, continuous Republic on the planet and for good reason. Wayne La Pierre of the NRA, of which I am a proud member, clearly stated the main problem with the treaty as the emphasis it places on governmental as opposed to individual rights. This is in clear contrast to the Second Amendment. Let me emphasize one other very important point. The left, liberal media elite portrays gun owners and NRA members as crazy, psychopaths, when in fact, the majority of the people I know who own firearms, are, lawyers doctors, CPAs, and business owners. We will not accept this and fortunately, as Mr La Pierre pointed out, 58 members of Congress, (bipartisan) have already stated they would never vote for a treaty that restricts individual control over guns or ammunition. Of course ratification by 2/3 of the Senate is necessary before any international treaty negotiated by the President or Executive branch becomes law. President Obama’s team needs to walk away and let the other member countries vote how they will. The President must stop caring about how this country is perceived in the rest of the world. It’s perhaps his greatest weaknesses.
