Judo Throw #15 – Utsuri Goshi – Changing Hip Throw

Utsuri Goshi is another counter to a hip throw.  To begin, tori and uki start in kumi kata position.  Uki attempts a left-sided hip throw.  Before uki can complete the throw, tori drops his weight and redirects uki’s momentum.  Tori maintains grip on lapel while grabbing around uki’s waist.  Tori drives up with his abdomen causing uki’s body to swing back and behind the tori.  The tori then catches uki on his hip and executes throw by springing with hip and pulling with his arms.    The timing on this throw is key as tori must catch the uki over his hip before uki lands on his feet.
