Yesterday I walked in to a Tommy Bahama and was incensed at the prices of their clothing, of which, much is made in China.  There were short sleeve sport shirts on the rack in excess of $120.  But the price point is not what troubled me, it’s the fact that at that price point, they aren’t manufactured here in the USA.  There is absolutely no excuse for not manufacturing them here.  Anyone who can afford $120 for a sport shirt can afford $140, the added price for making it here at home.  Those aren’t Wal-Mart prices and at those prices, our expectations should be higher.  Quite frankly, the material may be good quality, but the Chinese still do not produce top quality products.  That’s just the way it is and no one will convince me otherwise.  Has quality control improved?  Perhaps, but so has the cost of production as China’s economy has grown.  The products I purchase, most of which are made here, are far better.  Brooks Brothers over the years has moved in that same direction and is a large part of the reason I rarely shop there anymore.  But they still sell, a very small selection of made in USA dress shirts and I buy them regularly because they are top quality garments.  Are they more expensive?  Absolutely.  But so are the shirts they sell that are made in all of the other third world countries.  But they last much longer and wear better as well.   Again, I completely comprehend the Wal-Mart Model and that is a necessary option in many parts of the country but not when someone is paying top dollar.  People can make a difference if they choose and at the same time, help our US manufacturers.  If this issue matters to you, there are any many websites that come up when searching for made in America.  It`s time to bring back American manufacturing jobs from overseas and we have the ability to do it if we stop purchasing expensive Chinese produced products.  Brooks Brothers, the manufacturer of the suit President Lincoln was wearing when shot by John Wilkes Booth, should be particularly ashamed.
