Yet another foolish man has placed his foot firmly in his mouth by claiming women “enjoy rape”. In this case it was said by Daming Sanusi, a judge being considered for the Supreme Court of Indonesia. According to the Indonesian news agency Antera, Sanusi made the comment in front of the parliamentary board that was questioning him to see if he was qualified to sit on the nation’s top court. His was responding to the question of whether he believed the death penalty should apply in cases of rape, “Consideration needs to be taken thoroughly for the imposition of death penalty for a rapist because in a rape case both the rapist and the victim enjoy it.” His comment quickly spread on social media and has fueled outrage. There are widespread calls for his candidacy to be rejected. At a news conference, Sanusi said, “I made the remark without realizing it can harm people’s feeling,”. Any human being that doesn’t realize insensitive and ignorant comments like that hurt people’s feeling shouldn’t be sitting on any court. The chairman of the parliamentary commission, Gede Pasek Suardika, said “Daming’s remarks were inappropriate and that the public outcry against him would be taken into consideration.” Apparently worldwide outrage has been heard inside Indonesia, making his appointment to the bench unlikely. Unfortuantely, these types of comments aren’t unique to any country or region of the world. Todd Akin and Richard Mourdock made equally ridiculous comments just prior to the US elections in November. The positive side to this, is the world gets to see the pervasive feelings and attitudes of ignorant men throughout the world. Thankfully, these men aren’t capable of hiding their true feelings and attitudes towards women. Many men have still not gotten on board with regards to the fact that women are equals of men and need to be respected. There are still men who believe that if a woman is raped, she must have done something to provoke the attack. It’s quite sickening actually and the reason I believe rape should be punishable by death. The ultimate punishment could be the one thing that would deter men who might otherwise perpetrate violence against women from committing such acts.
