Tonight’s Vice Presidential debate, although not nearly as important as the Presidential debate, will give the American people its first real look at Paul Ryan in action.  At this point, we know what to expect from Biden.  He will either represent himself well or put his foot in his mouth as he often does.  For Ryan’s part, the American people need to see how he handles himself under pressure.  Can he hold his own, or will he fold in front of the more seasoned and experienced Biden, not to mention the lights, cameras and live audience?  If elected and something was to happen to Romney, would the country feel safe with Ryan at the helm?  Before Sarah Palin this question might have seemed less significant.  But hindsight being what it is, we need to know.  There is little chance the VP debate will change anyone’s mind, but can hurt Romney if Ryan founders.  If he does well, the Palin factor will no longer apply and we can focus on the next Presidential debate.  It has been mentioned by some reporters and commentators that Biden might have his sights set on the White House in 2016 but he would be seventy-four years old and it would be highly unlikely.  So this Debate for him is about solidifying his role as number two, not making an impression for a possible bid in 2016.  At the very least, it should make for an interesting evening of realty TV, Presidential politics.
