New Mexico Abortion Bill Causes Uproar

CB

Within minutes of an abortion bill being introduced by Republican Rep. Cathrynn Brown, R-Carlsbad, there was an uproar in the House and on social media.  According to Brown, the bill introduced in the House, 206, “was intended to make it a crime for a rapist to force his pregnant victim to have an abortion.”  When the actual bill is read, there is a sentence that can be interpreted that way, but one must read the entire section to understand its true meaning.  The bill reads, “Tampering with evidence shall include procuring or facilitating an abortion, or compelling or coercing another to obtain an abortion, of a fetus that is the result of criminal sexual penetration or incest with the intent to destroy evidence of the crime.”  Why would a woman who was raped, have an abortion to destroy evidence?   “Procuring or facilitating” can not be interpreted in any other way.  What she wanted to say was “anyone destroying the life of the fetus”.  Ms Brown is wolf in sheep’s clothing.  So if the victim of incest or rape has an abortion, she could be charged with a felony and serve up to three years in prison.  Clearly the part of the bill that states “compelling or coerced” means if a rapist forces a woman to have an abortion in order to destroy evidence is much clearer.  Representative Elizabeth Thomson, Albuquerque said, “I can’t judge her intent, but to me it feels like an extension of the war on women.”  She is absolutely correct.  The problem with this bill is that it should never have been introduced.  It doesn’t belong in the legislature and is disguised by this not so clever representative to do whatever is necessary to limit or eliminate, abortion rights.  But like it or not, abortion is legal and protected by the Constitution.  It’s difficult to understand why the religious zealots in this country can’t allow women to maintain their privacy and dignity in what is a very personal and perhaps medically necessary decision.  My suggestion to all those Americans out there who have nothing better to do than to try to control other people’s lives is, control your own.  Perhaps that will allow all of you to stay out of everyone’s else’s.  I look forward to the day when all of the religious fanatics will pick up and leave this country because, abortion, same-sex marriage and pot are all legal.  Of course they won’t be able to run to Canada because they’ve already figured out what is taking us so long to realize.  Despite religious beliefs, (Canada is a religious, Catholic country), Government has no place in our lives when it comes to personal, medical decisions.  Those decisions are to be made between a doctor and patient.  Well done, neighbors to the north.
