Lego Accused Of Racism

Lego 2Lego 1 Just when you thought you had seen everything, new stupidity rises to the surface.  Lego, perhaps the greatest toy ever invented, has been accused of racism.  Why?  Because some Turks in Austria have lodged a formal complaint over Jabba’s Palace saying it perpetuates negative stereotypes about Muslims.  Apparently it looks like a Mosque in Istanbul, Hagia Sophia and another Mosque, in Lebanon, al-Kabir.  A statement released on the Turkish Cultural community’s website states, “it is apparent that for the figure of the repulsive bad guy, Jabba and the whole scenery demonstrates racial prejudices.”  It’s quite unbelievable because Star Wars was made many years prior to 9-11 when those stereotypes worsened significantly.  Katharina  Sasse, a spokesperson for Lego told the Daily Telegraph, “the Lego Star Wars product, Jabba’s Palace, does not reflect any actually existing buildings, people or the mentioned Mosque.  She continued, “When designing the product, only the fictional content of the Star Wars saga was referred to”.  While there are certainly legitimate issues to raise regarding stereotypes of Muslims, clearly there was no malice intended from the toy maker.  Sometimes people look for things to complain about.  This is one of those instances.
