Louisiana Republican Governor Bobby Jindal spoke at the Faith and Freedom Coalition and claimed that there is a rebellion about to take place against Washington. Specifically, he said that, “I can sense right now a rebellion brewing amongst these United States where people are ready for a hostile takeover of Washington, D.C., to preserve the American Dream for our children and grandchildren.” This declaration is wrong and irresponsible. Of Course Jindal is playing to his audience as he determines whether or not he will run for president in 2016. He, as part of the extreme right has waged a war against anyone who disagrees with his beliefs. In the same speech he said that, “I am tired of the left. They say they’re for tolerance, they say they respect diversity. The reality is this: They respect everybody unless you happen to disagree with them,” he said. “The left is trying to silence us and I’m tired of it, I won’t take it anymore.” The problem with his speech is that it’s baseless. The government is responsible for ensuring that religion remains separate from the public forum i.e. public schools. The religious right has been trying to preach religious standards and they are losing ground except in their very small, isolated enclaves.
Gay marriage will become the law of the land before long and abortion will remain legal and these are just two issues that are driving the religious right crazy. Add to that the Common Core Education Standards and that is more than they can accept. It’s what they refer to as the attack on religion. Unfortunately for Jindal, many of the people to whom he preaches, are also racists who consider the color of his skin unacceptable. Many of these people would never consider voting for him and putting another person of color in the White House. The religious right is comprised of extremists. They have stolen the GOP from Conservatives such as me who aren’t foolish enough to dispute the Theory of Evolution and who comprehend the true meaning of “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion”. What Jindal has failed to understand is that the country has turned a corner and these extremists, that include him, are in fact in the minority. They are not fighting for their religious freedom but against the changes that are taking place across this great nation. What they refer to as an assault on religious freedom, we refer to as progress. And it will not be stopped or reversed by a group of backwards, uneducated, religious fanatics including Jindal. Hopefully when the smoke clears, there will be a GOP remaining, that represents the true, intelligent “progressive” conservatives, those who truly represent the party of Lincoln.
